Thornton City Councilwoman Eva Henry handily defeated Ken Ciancio in Tuesday’s Democratic primary for one of the seats for Adams County commissioner.
In the Republican primary for the same seat, results show business owner Gary Mikes earned the party nomination over Kaarl Hoopes.
The results set up a November showdown in District 1 between Henry and Mikes.
“I think last night sent a strong message, that we’re ready, willing and able to take back our county and make our citizens the priority again,” Mikes said. “I’m feeling good. We got a lot of momentum.”
Unofficial results posted late Tuesday night show Henry earned 60.96 percent of the democratic votes to Ciancio’s 39.04 percent.
The Republican primary was slightly closer, with Mikes earning 56.49 percent of the votes to Hoopes’ 43.51 percent.
Two seats on the county commission are up for grabs. In District 1, commissioner W.R. Skip Fischer decided not to run for another term, and in District 2, Alice early on to run for a re-election. Nichol also remains under criminal investigation into her relationship with Quality Paving, a now-defunct company at the center of a scandal in which taxpayers were defrauded of $1.8 million in paving projects that were never completed.
Republican Donnia Howell, Democrat Charles Tedesco, and American Constitution member James Fariello — seeking to take over the District 2 seat — faced no opposition in the primaries, but will compete against each other in the November election.
