A man who provided alcohol to a has been convicted of a misdemeanor.

Kyle Edward Riley, 23, of Longmont, was convicted Thursday by a Weld County jury of providing alcohol to a minor, a class-one misdemeanor, according to the Weld County District Attorney’s Office.

Ross Higuchi, a 18-year-old University of Northern Colorado freshman, leaped from the balcony of a fraternity house on April 16, 2011, and died several days later at North Colorado Medical Center.

Riley purchased alcohol for an initiation party that was held by the Delta Tau Delta fraternity at the University of Northern Colorado, according to police and prosecutors.

Higuchi, of Aurora, had been initiated into the fraternity and Riley provided the freshman with several shots of alcohol and a bottle of wine, the DA’s office said. Higuchi jumped from a second-floor balcony of the frat house during a dispute with fraternity members and received severe head injuries in the incident.

Riley is scheduled to be sentenced on August 21.
