GOLDEN, Colo.—A man charged with impersonating a firefighter at a wildfire in northern Colorado has turned himself in on similar charges in Jefferson County, where a deadly wildfire burned in March.

Jefferson County officials say 30-year-old Michael Maher turned himself in Friday afternoon. He is being held on suspicion of felony theft, felony criminal impersonation, and a misdemeanor charge of impersonating a public servant at the Lower North Fork fire west of Denver.

His bond was set at $20,000.

Investigators who searched Maher’s home and vehicle after he was suspected of impersonating a firefighter at the High Park fire in Larimer County say they found firefighting gear that was issued but never returned during the Lower North Fork fire.

His attorney has said Maher idolizes firefighters.
