ASPEN — —The number of foreclosure filings in Pitkin, Eagle and Garfield counties surged in the second quarter of 2012, suggesting that the troubles from the recession aren’t fully purged from the real estate market.
Lenders began 336 foreclosure proceedings in the three counties during the second quarter of this year. That is up 46 filings, or 13.5 percent, from the second quarter of 2011, according to a report compiled by Garret Brandt, a land-use attorney and real estate agent. Brandt based his report on information from the public trustees of each county.
In Pitkin County, there were 34 foreclosure filings in the second quarter of 2012 compared with 31 over the same period in 2011.
In Eagle County, the foreclosure filings increased to 142 this year compared to 137 for the second quarter last year.
The biggest jump came in Garfield County, which remains plagued by the slowdown in the gas industry. There were 160 foreclosure filings in Garfield County in second quarter 2012 compared to 122 in second quarter 2011.
