Five fire departments have extinguished a 100-acre grass fire that started in northeast Aurora this afternoon.
The fire started at East Jewell Avenue and East Yale Avenue, said Capt. Ryan Pool of the Sable Altura Fire Rescue.
About 28 firefighters from Aurora, Bennett, Buckley Air Force Base and Strasburg had the fire contained within a half hour and mopped up within an hour, Pool said.
No homes were burned. The fire came within 500 yards of the nearest home and 1 ½ miles from the closest residential neighborhood.
Had the fire reached a creek bed and ignited larger trees it could have grown quickly, Pool said.
