U.S. 24 will remain closed indefinitely because of the sinkhole on the road near the top of Tennessee Pass north of Leadville, officials announced Wednesday.

Detours are in place, including Colorado 91.

The sinkhole, about 100 feet deep, appeared on the highway’s shoulder earlier this week, above .

The Colorado Department of Transportation is examining the soil composition, out of fear the sinkhole could expand, while state historians are researching the full history of the tunnel, which was part of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway over Tennessee Pass, constructed as route in 1880.
