Denver’s 7News on Thursday was nominated for a national Emmy for its investigative reporting on .
Nominations for the 33rd Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards were announced by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). is available online.
The 7News investigation into the deaths of mental patients at Colorado’s Mental Health Institute in Pueblo ultimately led to a grand jury finding of official wrongdoing and systematic failure at the state hospital. and to changes in regulations and staffing.
John Ferrugia’s report with photojournalist-editor Jason Foster will compete in a regional reporting category. KMGH is nominated along with KING in Seattle, WSM in Nashville and WTHR in Indianapolis.
The KMGH story first aired 2010 and won a Murrow award in 2011.
The station ran a documentary on the subject, “Fatal Errors: Deaths at the State Hospital.”
The two-and-a-half year investigation is ongoing.
“These are people without a voice,” Ferrugia said.
This is the third consecutive year KMGH has been nominated for a national news Emmy.
The winners will be announced on Oct. 1 at Lincoln Center in New York.
