Detailed second-quarter campaign finance reports filed Monday, reveal considerable amounts of cash flooded into competitive congressional races in the spring months leading up to this November’s election.
In reports filed from candidates in the 6th Congressional District, Democratic challenger Joe Miklosi recorded his best fundraising quarter to date, though his campaign continues to lag behind in cash when compared to incumbent Republican Congressman Mike Coffman.
Miklosi raised more than $335,000 and now has about $518,000 in the bank. By contrast, Coffman raised about $600,000 for the quarter and the two-term incumbent’s warchest is at $1.8 million.
Final reports were due Sunday for the quarter from April through June.
Both Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton and Democratic challenger Sal Pace raised more than $410,000 in the quarter. The pair are locked in a contest to represent the 3rd Congressional District, which comprises 29 counties on the Western Slope and in southern Colorado.
In the second-quarter of this year, both raised more than Tipton and his incumbent opponent, U.S. Rep. John Salazar, did combined during the same quarter in 2010.
Meanwhile, Republican Joe Coors has contributed about $615,000 of his own money into his campaign to unseat Democratic U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter in the 7th Congressional District.
Coors, the great-grandson of brewery founder Adolph Coors , received $787,014 in contributions in the second quarter, with $396,735 coming from his own checkbook.
By contrast, Perlmutter received $504,931, easily outpacing the same quarter in 2010, when he received $295,539. Perlmutter has not contributed to his own race.
Each of the three incumbents from the 3rd, 6th and 7th Districts all have more than $1 million in the bank, while none of their challengers have yet to reach that mark.
Staff writers Lynn Bartels and Sara Burnett contributed to this report.
