FORT CARSON, Colo.—Fort Carson has held a memorial service for two soldiers killed in an insider attack in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Christopher J. Birdwell of Windsor, Colo., and Spc. Mabry J. Anders of Baker City, Ore., were honored at the service on Thursday at the infantry post outside Colorado Springs.

Birdwell and Anders died in Kabul on Aug. 27.

The (Colorado Springs) Gazette (bit.ly/NNcecF) reports that they were shot by an Afghan policeman being trained by American troops.

There were at least 12 such insider attacks in August alone, resulting in 15 deaths.

Afghan authorities have detained or removed hundreds of soldiers as they investigate the attacks.

Birdwell was 25 and Anders 21. Both were assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, part of Fort Carson’s 4th Infantry Division.
