GREELEY, Colo.—A man arrested in Arizona on a warrant stemming from a 1997 homicide officially faces a charge of first-degree murder in Colorado.
The Weld County district attorney filed the charge Friday against 35-year-old Consuelo Zavala. Zavala is accused of shooting 28-year-old Francisco Gasca as Gasca worked in an onion field on Aug. 25, 1997.
The Greeley Tribune reports () Zavala’s father was arrested the day after the killing and was later sentenced to three years in prison for being an accessory to a crime.
Consuelo Zavala was arrested this week in southern Arizona. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers say that after Zavala attempted to enter Arizona at the San Luis Port of Entry, a records check showed he was wanted on a homicide warrant.
