BOULDER, Colo.—A measure to ban smoking on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder has won unanimous approval from the City Council.
The Daily Camera reports ( ) a technical issue requires a third reading of the ordinance this month, but the measure is expected to take effect in January. It would ban smoking on the four blocks of the mall and the lawn of the Boulder County Courthouse.
First-time offenders could face up to $500 in fines. Police plan to issue warnings at first.
Proponents said the smoking ban would reduce litter and protect people from the health effects of secondhand smoke. Opponents worried it would discourage visitors.
