DENVER—Denver may have dismissed hockey coach George Gwozdecky, but he says he’s not done coaching.

The university said Monday that Gwozdecky was leaving after 19 seasons with the Pioneers. Gwozdecky said at a news conference Tuesday that he was stunned and shocked to learn he was being released but is moving forward.

He also said he’s not done coaching and is excited to explore the avenues that may be open to him.

Gwozdecky was 443-267-64 at Denver and was at the helm when the Pioneers won NCAA titles in 2004 and 2005. This season the Pioneers finished 20-14-5 and lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. It was Denver’s fifth early exit from the tournament in the last six seasons.

Gwozdecky says he understands he has to win.
