Gunfire early Saturday in the parking lot of a sports bar left one man dead and another gravely injured. Responding Aurora police officers had to call for backup because of interference by the crowd.

No one has been arrested, and there are no suspects, said Aurora police spokeswoman Cassidee Carlson.

“We’re not getting a whole lot of information,” she said. “We’re hoping today (Saturday) someone will come forward and say what they know.”

The two victims, described as being in their early 20s, have not been identified. One man died at an Aurora hospital, and the other has life-threatening injuries and was in surgery Saturday morning, Carlson said.

Police responded about 1:40 a.m. to Primo’s Sports Bar at 1433 Chester St. on a call of two men down in the parking lot.

“Usually when something like this happens, we first get a call of a bar fight,” Carlson said. “This time we just got a call that two people were down after a possible stabbing or shooting.”

Officers had to contend with an unruly crowd of about 100 people as they tried to reach the two men, each with multiple gunshot wounds, Carlson said.

Police called in reinforcements and had to push their way through the crowd to help the victims, she said.

Aurora firefighters took the two men to a hospital.

The Aurora Police Department’s Major Crime Homicide Unit and members of a gang squad are investigating the shootings, Carlson said.

At this early stage in the investigation, detectives know little about the events that led up to the gunfire, she said, and do not know what the motive might be.

Crime Stoppers is offering $2,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
