Though there’s no big undead Tupac moment to talk about like last year, the flagship weekend of has come to a close with a few humble, but notable, performances. Oddly enough the biggest news from the first night of the Indio, Calif., festival came from a band that didn’t even perform. debuted a and the list of contributors on the upcoming album. Even though the rumor had already been squashed, took the stage for its first headlining Coachella spot with the expectation that Daft Punk would make a surprise appearance. As anticipation built on Twitter during the performance, a special guest took the stage, though, it was R. Kelly instead of the French electronic duo. The unlikely team performed a mashup of Phoenix’s “1901” and R. Kelly’s “Ignition (Remix).”
Denver’s have played some pretty big shows (the Grammys) in their young career, but on Sunday at Coachella, frontman Wesley Schultz told the crowd this might have been their biggest yet. The set included a new song with Neyla Pekarek on lead vocals. Later that night there was a moment during Wu-Tang Clan’s show where it seemed like we’d have another holographic return of an MC. But as the iconic hip-hop group paid tribute to Old Dirty Bastard, they simply did him justice by rapping through a surprisingly touching “Shimmy Shimmy Ya.” Sunday also included a performance by stacked with new tracks from the upcoming “Modern Vampires of the City.”
