Colorado Department of Transportation snow plow crews will remain on snow-shift rotation through Tuesday as they prepare for the next storm slated to hit the metro area Wednesday.

“Snow shifts” mean crews rotate between 12-hours shifts from midnight to noon and then noon to midnight, CDOT spokeswoman Amy Ford said.

Monday’s winter storm dumped 31 inches of snow on Berthoud Pass in 24 hours and led to its closure. Mountain portions of Interstate 70 were also closed Monday night due to visibility problems and worries over avalanches, Ford said.

“Obviously, this was a very expansive storm,” she said.

CDOT dispatched 30 plows to work I-70 through Monday and into Tuesday and 120 plows on the Front Range and eastern plains, she said.

CDOT also used both solid and liquid de-icers to melt ice and make roads more passable, said Ford.

She said CDOT didn’t encounter any particular problems except for the size and scope of the storm.

“It was very heavy in the northern mountains and on the northern Front Range,” Ford said. “We are prepared to go at it again tonight.”
