
Denver’s weather forecasters have had their share of headaches lately, with storms that either failed to meet predictions or packed more of a wallop than expected.
It took a benefit for for two of them to answer the question critics were demanding to know: “Can’t you get anything right?”
Belen DeLeon of 9News won the grand prize, the Golden Rolling Pin Award, for shaping the perfect flour tortilla while Dave Aguilera of CBS4 received the prize for making a tortilla that looked the least like a tortilla. Hey, a prize is a prize, and Dave wasn’t complaining when judges Patricia Baca, Steve Monaco, Patricia Barela Rivera and Sandy Wolf presented him with a basket filled with goodies.
Yolanda Ortega and Jesse Ogas chaired the 14th edition of Tortillas for Tepeyac, a luncheon and roll-off held at the National Western Arena Complex. Ogas, the vice president for social responsibility at , also emceed the competition with Luis Canela, sports anchor at Entravision Communications.
Others taking part in this afternoon of masa madness included Commerce City Mayor Sean Ford; Denver Health’s chief executive, Dr. Art Gonzales; Jeanette Blanco-Wellers, CEO of JBlanco Industries; and Michele Ostrander, executive director of the Denver affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
