DENVER—A Westminster man convicted of strangling his ex-girlfriend to death has been sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole.

The Denver Post reports ( ) Christopher Thomas Mainock was sentenced Friday for the March 2011 death of 20-year-old Sarah Barroga-Hulett. He was convicted in February of murder, kidnapping and sexual assault.

Prosecutors say Mainock used chloroform to subdue Barroga-Hulett and drag her to his vehicle, where he sexually assaulted and strangled her.

His defense team argued he was insane at the time, but jurors disagreed.

District Judge Jill-Ellyn Straus told Mainock on Friday his crime “was the most selfish, callous act that could have occurred.”
