GEORGETOWN, Colo.—Authorities say U.S. Highway 6 over Loveland Pass has been closed because of an avalanche.

The Colorado Department of Transportation closed the highway Saturday afternoon as many skiers were making their way home from nearby Arapahoe Basin ski resort.

There were no initial reports of injuries, and a dispatcher with the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment because she was “very busy.”

Lisa Clarke Devore, who was headed back to Denver after skiing A-Basin, told the Associated Press she saw a fire truck and an ambulance on the pass, as well two search dogs headed into the area of the slide. She says she saw several ambulances, including one towing two snowmobiles, headed toward the pass.

The pass, which rises to an elevation of 11,990 feet, is popular among backcountry skiers and snowboarders.
