LONGMONT — A man accused of assaulting his estranged wife and then kidnapping his 3-year-old son from a Longmont home and fleeing to Canada will be deported back to Colorado to face charges.
An attorney representing Monty Turner, 51, at an admissibility hearing in Winnipeg, Canada, on Friday told a judge there that Turner wanted to return to the United States, according to Canadian news media reports of the hearing.
“At this time, he just wishes to emphasize that the allegations are not admitted,” Leslie Heinrichs said during the hearing, according to Global TV Winnipeg. “He wishes to return to the United States as soon as possible to face the charges against him.”
According to Global TV Winnipeg, Turner was ordered deported under a Canadian law that says foreigners cannot be admitted to the country if they face criminal charges elsewhere that would carry a maximum sentence in Canada of 10 years or more.
According to police, Monty Turner forced his way into his estranged wife’s home May 25, shocked Brandy Turner with a stun gun and sprayed her with pepper spray. With Brandy Turner disabled, he reportedly took their son, Luke, and fled, sparking an Amber Alert and nationwide search for the boy. He and the boy were found in Canada the next day.
Monty Turner’s father, Ronald Turner Sr., 72, is suspected of aiding with the kidnapping. He was arrested May 26 in Missouri and remains jailed. Missouri State Patrol troopers stopped the car Ronald Turner Sr. was driving because it was listed in the Amber Alert, but he was alone in the car. They reported that the older man denied involvement, but that children’s toys were found with the vehicle. A fugitive of justice warrant has been signed for Ronald Turner in Missouri and a $250,000 bond was set, according to the Boulder District Attorney’s Office.
Monty Turner was arrested on suspicion of assault, burglary and kidnapping, according to a warrant. He could face additional charges, as well.
