BRIGHTON, Colo.—The city of Brighton is advising residents to boil their water for three minutes before using it, after samples this week tested positive for E. coli.

The city said it issued the advisory Wednesday as a precaution and is doing more testing.

It says the presence of the bacteria could indicate the water is contaminated with human or animal waste, and that microbes in the waste could cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea or headaches.

The city’s water system serves more than 34,000 people in city limits.
