Nine northeast Colorado counties contemplating secession on Monday finalized the wording of the so-called 51st state question likely to appear on their fall ballots.
So far, only Cheyenne County has confirmed it will put the question to a public vote and, during a conference call, offered its ballot language for use by the other counties.
Cheyenne’s ballot question will read: “Shall the board of county commissioners of Cheyenne County, in concert with the county commissioners of other Colorado counties, pursue becoming the 51st state of the United States of America?”
Other counties will insert their respective names into the ballot question.
Representatives of Kit Carson, Phillips, Sedgwick, Weld and Yuma counties said commissioners will bring the issue to a final vote during regular meetings in the next two weeks.
“There is a very big possibility we will vote for it,” Yuma County Commissioner Trent Bushner said.
Commissioners from Logan, Morgan and Washington counties also participated in the call but couldn’t be reached for immediate comment.
