SEATTLE—Seattle police hope to spread the word about what’s legal and what’s not under Washington’s new marijuana law by handing out packets of Doritos in a target-rich environment—this weekend’s annual Seattle Hempfest.

Sgt. Sean Whitcomb says there’s still a lot of confusion about what’s allowed under Initiative 502, which was approved by state voters last November to legalize recreational marijuana for adults.

Public affairs officers decided they needed to reach the festival crowd. Whitcomb says they chose a Dorito giveaway “because they’re iconic as a delicious snack for people who might enjoy pot.” Each of the 1,000, one-ounce packets will include a label that provides basic pot law information and directions on how to find more answers.

KOMO-TV reports ( ) that the Seattle Police Foundation came up with the $260 for the snacks.
