Topping our picks of best Colorado shows this week are Real Estate and Angel Olsen. We’ll be seeing you there, and if you don’t make it out, follow the music musings and our
3) Shady Elders, Fingers of the Sun, Distant Correspondent — March 7, Hi-Dive
The woozy alt-rock of Denver’s Shady Elders will saunter across the U.S. during the next couple weeks. And to kick off their tour that winds through Utah, California, Washington and Montana, Shady Elders will perform at the Hi-Dive on Friday. Named one of , Shady Elders has had a productive year, which included opening up for Mazzy Star at the Ogden Theatre in November. Bringing a good lineup to the Hi-Dive show on Friday, Shady Elders will be joined by Fingers of the Sun and Distant Correspondent (who also landed on the breakout bands list).
2) Real Estate — March 9, Fox Theatre
There isn’t anything abrasive about Real Estate. Breezy to the point of drifting off completely, the band holds your attention with complex guitar picking, beautiful melodies and deep, relatable lyrics. Easygoing is hardly ever this elaborate. You can either relax and let it wash over you or really dig into Real Estate’s structure, driven along by a patient rhythm section. The band plays Boulder’s Fox Theatre on March 9, less than a week after the release of its third studio album, “Atlas.” The new release takes on a darker and more thoughtful mindset than Real Estate’s first two albums. But as always with the band, the result is as comfortable as a childhood memory. ($14-$18, foxtheatre.com)
1) Angel Olsen — March 10, Larimer Lounge
With just a guitar and a head full of songs, Angel Olsen takes on her own mind, pain, love and loneliness. While highly personal, this young singer-songwriter’s songs are empathetic. Her voice, ranging from yelps to ghostly croons to screams, captures the very range of realism and transcendental topics she writes about. This commanding depth of character and of songwriting will captivate the Larimer Lounge when Olsen stops in Denver on March 10. The artist is touring in support of her excellent new album, “Burn Your Fire for no Witness,” which was released in February. ($10-$14, larimerlounge.com)
