Interview with Lorianne McNeely, cook/manager

How did you get involved in this business?

We wanted to provide a local service while raising funds for global impact.

What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

We are a nonprofit coffee shop, staffed by volunteers, and all proceeds go to our parent organization, Global Refuge. Global Refuge is also a nonprofit that provides an emergency lifeline to victims of disease, war and disaster.

What do you like best about your line of work?

Everyone who comes into our coffee shop and makes a purchase contributes to our work to provide aid to those in distress. Their coffee purchase makes a difference in the lives of other people.

What is your business’ biggest challenge?

Having enough volunteers to run the shop efficiently.

Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

All our goods featured in our shop are made by artisans in the countries where we work. By selling these items, we are providing them with an international market and a fair price.
