3) Bill Callahan — Oriental Theater, Nov. 25, $15

Almost two decades into his career Bill Callahan decided to reinvent himself — or become himself, rather. In 2007 he released his first album under his own name (instead of his as his band name Smog). This year he released the critically-acclaimed album “Dream River” — his fifth as Bill Callahan. With his baritone voice with manly-man, dark lyrics Callahan turns the singer-songwriter into more of an art rock poet. On “The Sing” from his new album he softly and slowly chants, “Thank you, beer.” Now, who wouldn’t want to see that in person? Callahan plays the Oriental Theater on Monday.

2) Cat Power — Ogden Theatre, Jan. 24, $25.75-$30

Denver Cat Power fans probably weren’t expecting to be seeing singer-songwriter Chan Marshall twice in one year. Somewhat suddenly, Marshall announced two weeks ago that she would be playing the Gothic Theatre on Nov. 23. This show comes after she played Denver’s Ogden Theatre on Jan. 24. That show had Marshall playing some chopped-up and reorganized takes off “The Greatest.” She has a history of inconsistency with her live shows, but in January, Marshall was in control — and hopefully she can bring that to Denver again. ($25.75-$30, gothictheatre.com)

1) Tennis — Bluebird Theater, Nov. 27, $12-$15

Having released the EP “Small Sound” earlier this month, indie-pop band Tennis is bringing its U.S. tour back home to Denver on Nov. 27 at the Bluebird Theater. Made up of husband-wife team Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, Tennis has developed its sound over the past few years to become more technical and dynamic, as you’ll hear on “Small Sound.” The band spent some time honing its sound in Nashville this year and announced at a house party during the Underground Music Showcase that they are moving back home to Denver.
