The mother of a 3-year-old Frederick inside their home has been charged with a felony.
Dione Warren, who has been charged with criminally negligent child abuse resulting in death, turned herself in on Monday night, according to a Weld County District Attorney’s Office media release.
Warren called for help Oct. 28 from her home in the 500 block of Pine Street. Emergency responders found the boy in Warren’s bedroom, unresponsive and bleeding from the head.
The Weld County Coroner’s Office ruled the death accidental. The child shot himself with his stepfather’s gun, police said.
Investigators said the boy found the gun between the mattress and frame of a bed after Warren “left him home alone while she took her older daughter to school.”
The child’s stepfather, Jeremy McCollem, was not home at the time.
Warren has a bond hearing scheduled in Weld County at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
