The bassist and founding member of the British indie psych-rock group has officially announced his departure from the band for “personal” reasons. The crew dropped the news of Gwil Sainsbury’s exit , stating “With regret, Gwil Sainsbury is leaving Alt-J. This is purely a personal decision and as our best friend we support him completely.”

While no other details were revealed about Sainsbury’s exit, the news comes at a pivotal time for Alt-J. The Mercury-prize winning band had a wildly successful 2013 after their debut album “An Awesome Wave,” including a and a show at the . Alt-J has maintained a hectic tour schedule for the past year, traveling more than 156,000 miles in 2013 alone.

No replacement bassist has been announced, but the band is allegedly heading back into the studio to work on the follow up to “An Awesome Wave,” which will hopefully drop sometime this year.
