GLENDORA, Calif. — A destructive wildfire above foothill suburbs northeast of Los Angeles was reduced to smoke and scattered flames Friday, and residents of all but one of the remaining evacuated neighborhoods were told they could go home.

Fire officials say flare-ups occurred Friday within the 2½-square-mile burn area but none escaped the perimeter.

About 3,700 residents were ordered to leave their homes at the height of the fire Thursday, when five homes were destroyed and 17 other structures were damaged.
