GREELEY, Colo.—The Greeley History Museum is hoping to buy a set of historic letters sent to the community before it gained recognition.
Greeley founder Nathan Meeker published an article in a New York paper in 1869 about the advantages of living in the West and 3,000 people responded.
Two fourth-generation Weld County residents have offered to sell 320 of those letters to the Greeley History Museum for $16,000. The money has been raised and the letters are expected to be displayed soon.
According to the Greeley Tribune ( ), the Weld County family will also sell the museum a small bible given to Arvilla Meeker, Nathan’s wife, by their son in 1864.
The city is named after Horace Greeley, Meeker’s boss at a New York newspaper who helped found the community.
