DENVER—This week’s Bill To Watch in the Colorado Legislature
THE BILL:
House Bill 1055, doing away with special license plates for lawmakers.
WHAT IT DOES:
The bill would repeal special license plates issued to state lawmakers and members of Congress. This has become an issue because of a report last year from KCNC-TV that photo radar tickets were not being issued to lawmakers because their special license plates are not found in the Department of Motor Vehicles system.
WHO WANTS IT?
Republican Rep. Chris Holbert of Parker is sponsoring the bill, in response to the news report about the plates.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
The bill would save the state $564 annually because the license plates would no longer be issued, according to legislative fiscal analysts.
WHERE IT STANDS:
The bill faces its first hearing Thursday in the House Transportation and Energy Committee.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:
“We should be held accountable like any other citizen. We are elected to represent the people and there’s no reason for us to be treated differently.”—Holbert, speaking to KCNC-TV on July 16.
