Interview with Dan Brod and Ray Cox, veterinarians

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: It began in 1984 with a dream and a commitment by the founding partners of Deer Creek Animal Hospital to “provide the premier care and compassion your pet deserves.” Thirty years later, the neighborhood veterinary hospital has grown to become the largest (18,500 square feet) general practice veterinary facility in Denver, with more than 70 employees, including 13 full-time veterinarians and 24/7 emergency services.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: The depth and breadth of our practice and the fact that many of our doctors are in the forefront of veterinary medicine and often are teaching these practices and skills to veterinarians from around the world. We emphasize preventive medicine and focus on compassion in every encounter with our pet clients and their families. We work hard to help our clients’ pets stay as healthy as possible and be seen as quickly as possible. Veterinarians Ray Cox and Markee Kuschel pioneered laparoscopic surgical techniques for dogs and were among the first doctors in the country to perform laparoscopic spays. From digital radiology and ultrasound to our advanced dental center, operation bays and other specialty areas, we are prepared to deliver the full range of preventive and emergency pet health care available today.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: Pets are a part of our families. They are our children and they provide so much to our household culture. We know and understand this better than anyone and we have built our practice and our reputation around this reality. There’s nothing better than taking care of these pets and getting to know them and their families.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Our challenge is to grow our business without sacrificing our personal contact and commitment to each patient. We’ve been successful in doing that thanks to our incredible staff and the commitment we demonstrate each day to deliver high quality care.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: Celebrating our 30th anniversary in the same community, we were extremely excited to launch our 24/7 ER and urgent care services in May. It feels great to know that our once small neighborhood practice has grown into an incredibly innovative, technologically advanced animal hospital without losing sight of our vision and mission — delivering the compassionate care each pet deserves and staying true to and supporting a growing community which has supported the hospital for 2½ decades.
