The Nuggets played it safe in the NBA draft Thursday night, selecting Creighton forward Doug McDermott and then trading him to the Chicago Bulls, along with Anthony Randolph, for the 16th and 19th picks in the draft as well as a future second rounder.

The Nuggets drafted international center Jusuf Nurkic with the 16th pick. Nurkic played in the Adriatic League, where he averaged 11.7 points and 5.7 rebounds.

There is a strong possibility Nurkic will not be brought over to the NBA right away.

With the 19th pick the Nuggets selected Gary Harris out of Michigan State, widely considered to be the steal of the draft, getting him when they did. Harris was projected from the late lottery to the mid-teens.

Harris averaged 16.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game as a sophomore last season for Michigan State.

Harris’ reputation is as perhaps the best perimeter defender in the draft, and it’s well deserved. He was always placed on the most dangerous perimeter scorer on the opposing team and by and large was successful in shutting that player down.

Offensively, Harris was primarily used as a spot-up shooter and was regularly run off of screens to open him up. He hit 35 percent from 3-point range. Harris was most comfortable in catch-and-shoot and in screen-and-roll situations.

Shooting guard was the big winning position for the Nuggets, who on the day added Arron Afflalo via trade and Harris. The duo represents the Nuggets present, in which they can slot Afflalo in, and then the future, in which Harris figures to be a big part. Afflalo has a player option following next season, and if he leaves, then Harris instantly becomes a bigger part of the equation.

Financially, Harris’ fall, and the Nuggets’ savvy in picking him with the 19th selection instead of the 16th spot was a difference in millions of dollars of pay.

Had the Nuggets taken Harris at 11, he would have a three-year salary of roughly $6.1 million. At 19, it will be $3.8 million.
