Getting your player ready...

With everything that happens in the music world on a weekly basis, you couldn’t possibly be expected to keep up with it all. But don’t worry, with the Reverb Week in Playlist we’ll keep our ears to the ground for the important music news and releases of the week and compile it into the most digestible form we know: a playlist.

Don’t worry music fans, the World Cup final is this Sunday which means that you only have three more days to pretend like you care about and understand sports. While Germany was embarrassing Brazil on their home turf, there were some pretty stellar new releases this week. Spoon dropped another new track from their forthcoming album, and it is shaping up to be a promising release. Arctic Monkeys, George Michael and some other British musicians were mentioned in a tax avoidance incident which is mostly boring and not totally illegal so let’s avoid that and get to the good stuff now, shall we?

Interpol may be “All the Rage Back Home” but this new single is all the rage right here too

2014 seems to be the year that bands who have been quite since 2010 decide to release another album. See: Angus and Julie Stone, Spoon, and now Interpol. It is easy to be wary of sudden new releases, especially when a band has been mum for so long. It’s also going to take some serious indie-rock witchcraft for anything to beat “Turn on the Bright Lights,” but “El Pintor” seems to be shaping up pretty nicely. We can say from personal account (Interpol’s Glastonbury set) that this song sounds pretty killer live.

Saint Pepsi sings to Carpark, releases the real song of the summer

How could you forget summer of 2013? You hung out with friends, you picked up tennis, there was that day Wendy Peppercorn kissed you at the pool, and you listened to Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” on a never ending loop to the point where the words get and lucky no longer had any meaning. So far, this year’s song of the summer has unfortunately gone to Pharrell’s “Happy,” but “Fiona Coyne” is about to change that. Brooklyn artist Saint Pepsi has signed to Carpark Records (Toro Y Moi, Beach House, Speedy Ortiz) and released his first track “Fiona Coyne.” In the same vein as Toro and Daft Punk, Saint Pepsi mixes disco, dance and pop into a bubbly little package that deserves to be the summer song of 2014. Saint Pepsi also has Denver ties, having released a number of his first albums on Denver netlabel Keats//Collective.

Angus and Julia Stone’s “A Heartbreak” is only a heartbreak because it isn’t longer

Australian brother-sister folk duo Angus and Julia Stone haven’t released an album together since 2010, and we have been really feeling the weight of that lately. Luckily, this week they released a new single “A Heartbreak” complete with video and a whole slew of tour dates. If you have been drooling over First Aid Kit’s latest album, this light and airy single acts as a nice companion piece. Based on social media musings, we should be expecting another album from the Siblings Stone, hopefully sometime this year. Their tour stops at The Gothic in Denver on Oct. 15.

The Breeders are breeding some new music (that was a stretch, we apologize)

Rock outfit the Breeders, who are fronted by former-Pixies member Kim Deal, are heading back out on tour this fall where they will allegedly debut some new music. While Interpol et al. may be a part of the “no releases for the last four years” club, the Breeders are captain of the “no releases for six years” club with their last being 2008’s “Mountain Battles.” We are pretty excited about the prospect of some new tunes. But until then, we always have “Cannonball.” Their fall tour hits Summit Music Hall on Sept. 5.

Fort Collins’ Road 34 is a venue no more

It’s hard times out there for music fans who live in Fort Collins’ “West Campus” neighborhood. After 8 years of being a bar-bike shop-venue, Road 34 has decided to go back to focusing on the first two. Road 34 has been a great mid-sized venue for local acts (as well as some national ones) to frequent and was definitely a favorite among FoCo concert goers. In a fashion similar to that of Morrissey, the decision was abrupt and seemed to come out of nowhere. Let’s raise a dollar Coors in tribute to another good one lost.

*Carl Barat has definitely never played Road 34, but we seemed to think this song matched how we are feeling pretty nicely.

“Fine Diners and Finer Whiners” is your new favorite song from Philadelphia

Ron Gallo (formerly of Toy Soldiers) released his solo album “RONNY” back in June, following it up with this video for the track “Fine Diners and Finer Whiners” this week. We made a point to mention that Gallo is a Philadelphia musician up above because on first listen you would think he had to be a Colorado man. This track is filled with thin mountain air and crisp craft beer and everything else that Colorado music fans (and well, just Coloradans in general) adore. “RONNY” is described as “weird country” and “troll pop” on Gallo’s website, and while those descriptors may not make any sense at all out of context, once you hear the track above, it all comes together, in the most perfect way possible. “RONNY” was released by Philadelphia’s latest label/artist collective American Diamond Recordings, which further proves that if Northern Colorado was to have a sister music scene somewhere in the United States, Philadelphia is definitely it.
