Nine Inch Nails, Wye Oak and more make our list of best Colorado shows this week. We’ll be seeing you there, and if you don’t make it out, follow the music musings and our
4) Jurassic 5 — Ogden Theatre, July 21-22
We didn’t realize Jurassic 5 had such a fondness for Colorado until we saw In the video for their first song in eight years, the iconic hip-hop crew hangs out at Red Rocks, Belly Up Aspen and other various places in Colorado. After releasing the video in May, Jurassic 5 is returning to the state for a two night stint at the Ogden Theatre in Denver on July 21-22. Openers include Dilated Peoples, Beat Junkies and MC Supernatural.
3) Wye Oak — Bluebird Theater, July 19
Sometimes change is good — like switching from dial up to DSL, from Bing to Google, from Zune to iPod. In the case of Wye Oak’s new album, “Shriek,” the band changed in the best possible way, and possibly even saved its career. While the band toiled away as an indie folk duo it hit a stagnant spot. With this latest release, Wye Oak ditched the guitars for synthesizers, in favor of a more electro-pop sound that has become stylish these days. While the band retains its core sound — notably Jenn Wasner’s distinct vocals — it has also given itself a new breath of life. In support of “Shriek,” Wye Oak will return to Colorado to play Denver’s Bluebird Theater on July 19.
2) UMS kicks off on July 24
Better get your work shift for July 25 covered now, because The UMS kicks off on Thursday the 24th. Our favorite four days of music begins at 8 p.m. sharp, and the first night brings In the Whale, Roadkill Ghost Choir, Homebody, Somerset Catalog and many others. Have fun, but save your strength for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. God speed, UMSers.
1) Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden — Red Rocks Amphitheatre, July 21-22
Sure it hasn’t been a full year since Nine Inch Nails last played in Colorado, but seeing as the band hadn’t played here since going on hiatus in 2009, there are still plenty of rabid fans waiting for a chance to see Trent Reznor and co. That must explain why the band has scheduled two shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on July 21-22 to appease about 20,000 more Colorado fans needing some NIN time. To sweeten the deal, Nine Inch Nails is touring with Soundgarden, in support of each band’s iconic album — “Downward Spiral” and “Superunknown,” respectively — which are celebrating 20th anniversaries this year.
