Re: “Wes Welker: ‘I’m as shocked as everyone’ by four-game suspension,” Sept. 3 sports story.
Yet another NFL player has been suspended. In this instance, which is only one of many, Wes Welker of the Denver Broncos has been suspended for alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), an allegation which he appears to reject.
It is about time that fans of the Broncos and of the NFL demand more transparency when suspensions or other penalties are meted out. By no means is it clear to the fans how such decisions are produced or what standard of proof has been used to “convict” a player. Until such proof has been established unambiguously, fans should demand reinstatement of the player, and such proof must absolutely be available to the public.
The NFL, whether it likes it or not, is not a dictatorship and we live in society where “innocent until proven guilty” is the rule of the land.
