Union Station is seen from under the new train canopy. (Andy Cross, The Denver Post)
Millions of taxpayer dollars were spent to redevelop Denver’s Union Station. It is unacceptable that planners of this so-called “transit mecca” failed to include a dedicated loading/unloading zone for Amtrak and other public transit passengers who need to arrive or depart by car, as I unfortunately discovered when older relatives came to visit via Amtrak last week. I learned later from a Larimer Associates representative that I apparently was supposed to have jockeyed for space at the crowded Crawford Hotel valet zone.
To make Union Station more guest-friendly, accessible and usable by all, city leaders should demand that a small part of the former Union Station parking lot be restored to create a dedicated, safe, partially covered drop-off/pick-up zone, respecting the needs of those Amtrak passengers and guests who are unable to walk or carry luggage long distances. Denver’s airport offers this safety and convenience, so why can’t Denver’s train station?
