In a game for the ages, Running back Daniel Quin carried the ball 64 times for 553 yards and nine touchdowns to lead Sand Creek over Air Academy 68-62 Friday night.
No, seriously: 64 carries, 553 yards, nine touchdowns.
The 64 carries shatters the state’s record for most rushing attempts in a game, breaking Poudre’s Teran Mawhinney’s mark of 59 in 2010. The 553 yards is third-most all time, behind Montbello’s Leonard Jones (584 in 1999) and South Park’s Cory Davis (567 in 1986). His nine rushing TDs are tied for second with Colorado D&B’s Sam Harris, who accomplished the feat in 2004, and trail Hugo’s Ken Pearson, who had 12 in 1930.
“It’s like trying to tackle a fire hydrant,” Sand Creek coach Rod Baker said of his 5-foot-8, 205-pound senior.
This comes one week after Quin ran for 328 yards and five touchdown in a win against Aurora Central. Quin is the first player to cross 1,000 yards this season. He has 1,177 rushing yards on 155 carries and 15 touchdowns in four games.
The 130 combined points between Air Academy and Sand Creek just miss the state’s top 10 all-time. Idalia beat Woodlin 81-54 to combine for 135 points on Oct. 21, 2005.
The score was 41-40 Air Academy entering the fourth quarter. When the two teams just battled back and forth, scoring a total of 49 points in the final period of play. There were 15 lead changes in the game.
“They’d score, we’d score, they’d score, we’d score,” Air Academy coach Mike Roof said. “At the end we blinked and they won.”
With about three minutes to go, Air Academy scored to make it 62-60. Quin powered his way into the endzone to give Sand Creek the lead again with less than two minutes to go.
In a game filled with offense, it was defensive stop by Sand Creek on fourth and two with 38.9 seconds remaining that sealed the victory for the Scorpions.
