El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said in a television interview that controversy surrounding supposed Sheriff’s Office “mystery accounts” is unfounded.

Maketa told Betty Sexton of Gazette news partner KKTV, in an interview that aired Sunday, that he feels the Sheriff’s Office has been “singled out,” and that the accounts are legitimate.

“There’s a lot of hype about secret accounts, mystery accounts, million dollar mystery accounts,” he said. “That is really nothing more than people running around telling lies and then the media buying into it and never asking the questions, ‘can we see your accounts?'”

Details of a supposed mystery account emerged earlier in the summer after conflicting reports.
