Glenn Haggstrom, left, and Stella Fiotes, both from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, give testimony as U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman holds a “field hearing” in Denver on the cost overruns and delays with the construction and completion of the VA Hospital in Aurora last April. (Kathryn Scott Osler, The Denver Post)

Re: “Finish reforms in VA debacle,” Sept. 19 editorial.

In your editorial about the new Veterans Affairs hospital in Aurora, you correctly praise Congressman Mike Coffman for his work and leadership in exposing the massive flaws, incompetence and possible fraud in the construction project. This appears to be a systemic federal government problem and not isolated to the VA. I could go through the alphabet, but unless you are living under a rock, you have heard of the IRS, DHS and DOJ scandals.

The VA hospital construction issues are not unique to Denver. Orlando, New Orleans and Las Vegas have had, and in some cases continue to have, massive cost overruns and delays. There is one common thread in all the cases. The same Washington bureaucrats are and were responsible for these projects. They continue to receive obscene salaries while their incompetence has caused untold misery to veterans and taxpayers. The solution is pink slips.

Myron Spanier, Aurora
