A Denver Sheriff Department captain has been placed on leave, another captain has been reassigned, and numerous deputies are under investigation after a Sept. 4 incident at the downtown jail.

Mary Dulacki, records coordinator for the Denver Department of Public Safety, said Thursday that Capt. Wayne Joachem has been placed on investigatory leave. Capt. Anthony Gettler, who had been serving as an acting major, has been moved back to a captain’s position and reassigned to another area, Dulacki said.

“There are numerous deputies whose conduct is being investigated,” she said.

Dulacki would not release any more details about the incident, saying she was not able to discuss the facts of an ongoing investigation.

Two sources familiar with the episode told The Denver Post the incident involved an officer bringing cigarettes to an inmate at the Downtown Detention Center.

One source said the cigarettes were provided to help calm an unruly inmate.
