GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) — Former Republican congressman and current Mesa County commissioner candidate Scott McInnis says he mishandled the plagiarism scandal that helped tank his bid for governor four years ago.
McInnis tells The (Grand Junction) Daily Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1yuaYS5 ) that he didn’t plagiarize essays on water he submitted to the Hasan Family Foundation during a fellowship with the private foundation in 2005 through 2006.
McInnis apologized at the time but blamed the plagiarism on a researcher. He tells the newspaper that he shouldn’t have apologized because he used a ghost writer.
After the plagiarism scandal broke, McInnis lost the 2010 Republican gubernatorial nomination to Dan Maes. Maes went on to lose badly to Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper.
