Dr. Chris Nevin-Woods, who for 22 years has been the city and county of Pueblo’s public health director, is one of four “immunization champions” recognized by the .

She received the 2014 Big Shot of the Year Award at the nonprofit organization’s annual S.O.U.P. (Shots Offer Unrivaled Protection) fundraiser held at Littleton’s historic Inn at Hudson Gardens.

Nevin-Woods has been in practice for 30 years, specializing in family medicine and public health/preventive medicine.

The Metro Denver Sure Shot Award went to Sundari Kraft, founder of Vaccinate for Healthy Schools; Lori Quick, a registered nurse and public health consultant, was the Regional Sure Shot Award recipient; and Dr. Sean O’Leary, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Children’s Hospital Colorado, was named the SOUPer Hero for 2014.

In addition to witnessing the award presentation, the 200 guests sampled five soups — tomato, pumpkin, roasted poblano and corn chowder, Thai vegetable and minestrone — from . provided double-chocolate cake and pecan bars for dessert, while Boulder’s furnished the music.

The evening’s speaker was Andy Marso, an award-winning journalist and survivor of a rare form of meningitis. He is also the author of “Worth the Fight: How Meningitis Nearly Killed Me Then Changed My Life for the Better.”

Guests included Roberta Smith, president of the Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition board; executive director Stephanie Wasserman; state Rep. Dan Pabon; and Drs. Allison Kempe, James Todd and James Shira, all of whom have received the Big Shot Award in years past.

The Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition is a statewide, independent nonprofit organization and does not accept funding from vaccine manufacturers or distributors.
