
The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office confirmed on Monday that a man who killed himself on Saturday as police officers in Aurora attempted to contact him.
The office said it used fingerprints to identify Williams.
Clifton Williams, 40, shot himself about 9 p.m. at a vacant home on the 1300 block of South Biscay Street where officers acting on a tip had located him.
As officers were entering the backyard to take Williams into custody, they heard a gunshot and found a man lying on the ground suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.
Police said they found a handgun nearby.
“He was still alive at the time, he was transported (to the Medical Center of Aurora) and later died of his wounds,” Sgt. Chris Amsler told The Denver Post.
Williams in an attack on a 27-year-old woman in the 2200 block of South Broadway during the early morning hours of July 24, 2011.
The victim was walking home when she was grabbed from behind and attacked before she escaped and flagged a car.
Williams was out on $60,000 bail and left his trial on Tuesday during a lunch break.
A jury found Williams guilty of second-degree kidnapping, attempted sexual assault, unlawful sexual contact and third-degree assault.
