A man who last month pleaded guilty to killing an airman from Buckley Air Force Base in a hit-and-run accident was sentenced Friday to 12 years in prison.

William Pettapiece, 33, was eastbound on East Alameda Avenue in Denver in April when he struck the rear end of a motorcycle, according to the Denver district attorney’s office.

Michael Snyder, 23, who was thrown from the motorcycle after impact, died from his injuries.

Pettapiece, who faced up to 24 years in prison, made a statement to the court, apologizing for what he had done.
