AURORA — Six months after former Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates stepped down, Aurora City Manager Skip Noe has put together a list of finalists for the job.

The list of finalists, who could be the top five of several dozen under consideration, is expected to be made public soon, then an introduction will be held for community members, followed by interviews with the City Council and city manager.

“The decision is the city manager’s decision,” Mayor Steve Hogan said Tuesday. “The council will have some input, such as who they, as a group, like better.”

The finalists could include current Deputy Police Chief Rob McGregor, who expressed publicly his interest in the job and was considered to be a top in-house candidate. A diverse group is also expected to make the list. But the number of finalists could change.

Current Interim Police Chief Terry Jones already has said he is not interested in the spot on a permanent basis.

At a meeting in July, community members said increasing the diversity among the rank-and-file was a priority, while others said they would like to see the city hire from within to keep Oates’ good work during his tenure going.
