Interview with Stephanie Scheuer-Behl, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: I am obsessed with shopping, and I’d like to think that I have high-end taste, but I do not have a high-end budget. I started Gelty so I could help people find the things they love, or help them achieve their style objectives without having to pay full price. There is always a way to find items that you need or want at a discount. I am exceptionally good at it, as I can honestly say I’ve never paid full price for anything.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Professional styling and personal shopping services are limited in Denver. In addition, they can be very expensive. The purpose of Gelty is to teach people that style doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Figuring out how to mix and match clothes and buying a few finishing touches can really elevate someone’s style. A small personal investment can pay huge dividends on personal appearance.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: Finding the best deal on something. I am unbelievably happy when when I’ve purchased something at 50-75 percent off the regular retail price that I absolutely love. It makes me even happier when I wear what I love over and over again, so I know I got my money’s worth and look great doing it.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Getting the word out that most people need this type of service. I find that people fall into three categories that make them think they “have nothing to wear.” They either hate shopping, they buy the same thing over and over again so nothing really stands out, or they have so much in their closet that they don’t even know what they have. I can help with all of these things.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: Every time I’ve done a closet edit, people come back and tell me how relieved they feel, like a weight has been lifted off. It is amazing how long people hold on to things that they don’t need or want, but the item played a roll in their lives. For example, getting rid of the first interview suit you wore 20 years ago is very reasonable. Sometimes people need a little push and emotional support to do so — that’s what I am here for.
