Getting your player ready...

BOULDER — While Colorado’s football coaches have grappled with injuries at safety the past three weeks, there is one player in the secondary who has been the definition of stability and consistency.

Senior cornerback Greg Henderson will play his final road game in a CU uniform Saturday at No. 3 Oregon.

Henderson has been one of the best players on the team throughout much of his career.

“Hopefully, I leave a good legacy of consistency at cornerback and making plays and competing against anybody no matter when I was a freshman or now,” Henderson said. “I’m going to give it my all, give it my best shot. Hopefully, the younger guys can see that and it keeps going and keeps flowing for years to come.”

Henderson has CU’s career record for defensive plays from scrimmage with 3,013. He has started 43 of 45 games he has played. The only two games he missed were early in the 2012 season when he suffered a knee sprain.

He leads the Buffaloes with 14 passes broken up this season, which is no small accomplishment considering CU ranks fifth in the nation in that category. He ranks third in passes broken up in CU history with 36, behind Marcus Washington (42) and Damen Wheeler (39). But Henderson is frustrated that he hasn’t made an interception as a senior after making four and scoring two touchdowns as a junior.

“Hopefully, I can get some picks in the last two games,” Henderson said. “It would help me feel better about the season.”

Henderson came to CU as a two-star prospect, added to the 2011 recruiting class in the final weeks before signing day by then-Buffs coach Jon Embree and his staff.

He came with a feisty, competitive spirit and became the seventh true freshman in CU history to start a season opener. He set a freshman record for plays from scrimmage that season, playing 828 of 863 possible snaps on defense. That record was broken last season by linebacker Addison Gillam.

Henderson leads CU again this season with 693 snaps from scrimmage, but when his senior season comes to an end it appears he will back in the familiar position of trying to prove himself. This time he’ll be hoping to make believers out of NFL scouts.

Henderson is seen as a possible late-round draft pick based on most Internet sites dedicated to evaluating and ranking NFL prospects. No matter, he will certainly get his opportunity to make an impression in an NFL training camp next summer.

“Overall, I’ve thought he has competed, he’s fought, he’s stayed healthy, he’s played through everything,” said CU coach Mike MacIntyre. “He’s done some good things. Of course, we would like to have a few more plays and he would like to have a few more, but at the same time, he has played well enough out there on that island against these guys. I think he’s played well.”
