FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — Authorities say a pilot was injured when he crashed a small plane at the Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport.

Battalion Chief Michael Cerovski with the Loveland Fire Rescue Authority tells The Coloradoan (http://noconow.co/1G1iN1W ) the pilot, whose name and age have not been released, crashed near the main runway at about 2:30 p.m. Friday. Rescue crews found the plane splintered in pieces with its tail almost completely gone.

There was no active fire when crews arrived, but there was smoke.

Cerovski says the pilot was awake and talking when he was taken away by ambulance. The Denver Post reports he suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

It was unclear if the man was trying to land or take off when he crashed.
