ITHACA, N.Y. — The University of Denver hockey team couldn’t figure out a way to take its winning streak on the road.

The Pioneers managed only sophomore forward Trevor Moore’s first-period goal in a 4-1 loss to Cornell on Friday. It was DU’s first game at Lynah Rink in nearly 35 years.

Denver (8-4-0) had won three consecutive games and five out of its last six, but the Pioneers were no match for Mitch Gilliam, the Cornell goaltender who recorded 31 saves.

“Give credit to Cornell. They executed their game plan well,” said DU coach Jim Montgomery. “We generated more scoring chances and played a little faster in the third period, so hopefully that’s something we can learn from and play like that for 60 minutes (Saturday) night.”

Moore’s goal in the first period, on a nifty feed from Daniel Doremus, tied the score 1-1.

But Christian Hilbrich beat DU goaltender Evan Cowley in the second period for his second goal, giving Cornell the lead.

John Knisley added a goal for Cornell (5-4-1) in the third period, and the Big Red added an empty-net goal for the final score.
