JACKSON, Wyo. —Officials at the National Elk Refuge say they’re trying to discourage a herd of 170 bison from venturing into nearby Jackson.

The bison got within 250 yards of town Wednesday before refuge officials used their vehicles and fired rubber bullets to shoo them away.

Bison can top 2,000 pounds and are known to be aggressive. Refuge manager Steve Kallin says bison wandering into town would create extreme safety risks.

Tall fences separate the refuge from Jackson. Even so, refuge spokeswoman Lori Iverson says bison could get into town along Elk Refuge Road.

The road is popular with walkers and joggers, and refuge officials on Tuesday herded bison away from a parking area along Elk Refuge Road.
